The metaverse, a hybrid society of the real and the virtual is attracting significant attention from academia to industry and is starting to change the world. Composed of ten chapters, this book introduces the metaverse from three aspects – concept, content and context. It starts with numerous concepts related to the metaverse, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, Web 3.0 and NFTs and describes the background, features, advantages and disadvantages. Finally, it gives the context of the metaverse and illustrates the new society in the virtual world, consisting of economic systems, assets, social activities, security, law, etcetera.

Dr. Shenghui Cheng is a WestLake fellow and the director of the Intelligent Visualization Lab, WestLake University, China. He obtained a Ph.D. in computer science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (Stony Brook University), and conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Harvard Medical School, US. He also served as a consultant for the World Bank, a mentor of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Global Executive Leadership Program, the executive chairman of the CSIG-VIS Big Data Summit Forum, the program committee member of the IEEE VIS, IEEE Pacific Vis, and Chinavis etc. He was selected as a high-level overseas talent in Shenzhen and leadship program in university of Zhejiang Province, China.
